Reflection!!!!

When I started Reading 25, 15 weeks ago, I thought it would be more of an Elementary English class thinking that I would just breeze right through it with no problem. But once I started the class, I instanly knew that my thoughts were somewhat wrong. The class did assist with English, but it helped with my reading in so many different ways. It wasn't as easy and simple as I thought it would be, it was very fast paced, and included tons and tons of reading, writing, as well as thinking. The complete total opposite of what I was expecting.

15 weeks ago, I was more of a browser reader. I never really read things to the full extent, I basically would browse through it, and never really got the full complete understanding of what I was reading. Now I take my time when I read, and when I am unsure of something I try to go over it a couple of times to receive a better understanding. If I come across a word that i'm not to familiar with, I look them up in the dictionary, and that also helps me when I am reading. I most definately feel a change in my reading techniques now then before.

My overall experience in Reading 25 was a very pleasant one. I learned alot of new things, and had the chance to sharpen my skills of things I learned in the past. It was hard work, and we had a quiz like every other day, but I think that better prepared us for reading. Mrs. Burrus was a excellent instructor, and had lots of patience with us throughout the semester, and always put time aside for us outside of class to help us with anything we needed. I loved my time in the classroom, and I will surely take everything that I learned with me in the future.

My Argument!!!!!

Why is the government cutting all the programs pertaining to the children?? That isn't doing anything positive for the children of our future, it will probably hurt them and their parents more than anything. They are cutting all free preschool programs, and they are also cutting free child care programs, and they are even talking about cutting the WIC (women, infants, children) program. If the government expects women to work, and we are considered low income families, we will not be able to keep a job if we don't have the proper child care for our children, if you have to pay for child care and you only make a small amount of money, it defeats the purpose of you working in the first place. And if the government expects our children to be healthy, cutting the WIC program will not do any good for the kids as well. The WIC program supports Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, Infants and children to keep the children healthy from conception until age 5. If the government is going on a so called BUDGET,  I feel like they should start with all adult programs, before instantly cutting off all the programs for the children.

Bystander Effect!!!!!

A couple of years ago, I had a personal experience of the Bystander Effect, matter of fact, I was the actual Bystander. My best friend, my son, and I were walking to my best friend’s house, in which she lived there with her boyfriend and his family. I had strong intentions that I would be doing my best friend's hair, and that it was supposed to be a normal day as always. But to make a long story short, my best friend's boyfriend had found messages on her Face Book account of her talking to some other guy and flipped out. Soon as we got inside of the house I instantly knew that something was wrong. It was black trash bags filled with clothes, and all of her personal items thrown everywhere. Then, my best friend's boyfriend started yelling, and cursing her out, telling her that she needed to get out. I guess she wasn't moving fast enough for him, so he decided to push her out the front door (mind you the girl is only about 100 pounds). They then took the argument outside, and it started to get more heated, he then ripped her shirt off of her and tried to choke her, my best friend tried her hardest to fight back. They argued for about 5 more minutes, and finally her boyfriend stopped yelling and went back inside.
I feel like this is a perfect example of the Bystander Effect because I stood there the whole time, and said or did nothing to defuse the situation knowing that it was wrong. Normally, her boyfriend is far more peaceful, and less confrontational when they it's just the two of them arguing. However, he saw that she had company and decided to take advantage of this opportunity to get physical. Personally, I'm not quite sure if he is bipolar, or has some type of mental disability but he does have the tendency to act different when it's just him and her, versus when they are surrounded by a group of people.

Self Regulated Behaviors!!!!

The behavior I chose was Time management. The reason I chose this behavior, was mainly because that specific topic is one of my biggest factors not only in school, but in life. I am a procrastinator by nature, and I have no problem admitting it. I always wait until the very last minute to get things done, but for the most part I usually get things done without any major issues. I recently had a problem just a few days ago with my time. I had a test in my Art class, and basically waited until the day before to even attempt to study. So I figured I would make time to study like always, but instead I had so many other things I needed to do, cooking, cleaning, tending to my kids, and the dogs etc. Before I knew it I had completely lost track of time, it was 11:58 pm, and I was beyond tired, so I decided to just go straight to sleep. The next morning I tried to study, but it was way to late. Luckily my Professor had pushed back the test until our next class session, boy was I lucky. So from now on, I plan on buying some sort of Planner, and start writing out the things that I need to do, and the time that they need to be done, and try my best to stick to that schedule. Time is really scarce, especially when you have a million and one things to do. Hopefully this new technique will help me manage my time better.

My Reading History!!!!

When I was young I was always a strong reader and would always write more than my peers. But I believe that my writing skills weren't the best because I never really got perfect grades on my papers, etc. But a long story short, I like to read and write but i'm sure i'm probably not doing it correctly. So I pretty much enrolled in the Reading class to expand, as well as sharpen my reading and writing skills.
